Oh it’s the merriest time of year again, when kids start to dream of sugar plums, stockings and Santa Claus visiting. It’s time to dust off the Dear Santa Letters, so we have a special gift to get you and your kids excited. A FREE printable letter to Santa template.

What a great way to start the holiday season off, than by having your kids write their annual Santa Letter. Or if this isn’t yet a thing, give it a try. You may just want to join in the fun yourself.

Why Letters to Santa Are Magic

Our youngest is eight, and just on the cusp of starting to think Santa isn’t real. I want to embrace and maintain our traditions as long as I can. Before some of the magic and excitement young children bring to the holidays changes.

One of the ways we do this is with our yearly Dear Santa Letter. Here are a few good reasons to start a family tradition of Letters to Santa Claus:

  • You get to know what they actually want. If you get the letters done early enough, you may have time to help the Santa magic along a little.
  • It’s a good opportunity to start to talk to your children about the spirit of Christmas, and that it isn’t just about presents. Help them think of Christmas Wishes they could write about that are not just all about their Christmas gifts.
  • Kids can practice their writing skills, in a fun way they will enjoy. Plus you can teach them how to address and mail an evelope. Sending Snail Mail may soon be a lost art!
  • Who doesn’t love getting mail in return? Especially from a jolly, larger than life magical person who travels the world bringing joy to boys, girls, and children around the world. I’ll put a couple of resources below to get a return letter from Santa.

Supplies You’ll Need to Write Your Letters To Santa Claus

Really you just need some basic supplies, to be all set for this fun activity.

  • Printer Paper or take to your local office supply store and get it printed off.
  • Santa Letter Templates – Grab here, then print off as many as you need, for personal use
  • Pens, Pencil Crayons or Pencils – we love using gel pens in fun colors for the older kids.
  • Envelopes (for mailing the letter back to you) – plain white envelopes like these work well

Letter to Santa Printables

While you could get your kids to write their own Santa Letters from scratch, sometimes it’s a bit easier with some prompts, a little color and cool illustrations to get them in the spirit. Especially of they are younger, or more hesitant on the writing front.

Printable Letters to Santa ( Ages 2-6)

Younger children may have difficulty or be unable to write out sentences, which is why we created a fill in the blank letter to Santa template with prompts. One letter has a line for the youngsters to fill out their name, where they live, how old they are, and what their Christmas wishes are. Plus there are spaces to draw a picture for Santa, and what treats they will leave out for Santa and the Reindeers on Christmas Eve.

There are a few ways you can make this fun, educational and interactive:

  • If your child isn’t writing yet, no problem! Just Ask your children the questions and have an adult fill in the letter.
  • Have an adult lightly write out there answers in pencil, and get the kids to trace over their answers.

Letter to Santa Template (Ages 7+)

If your kids are more into writing, then you can use the open free letter to Santa Template, which is blank and ready for their creativity to blossom. There is enough room for them to write what ever catches their fancy.

Where to Mail your Letter to Santa Claus

Since as everyone knows there is only one Santa’s Workshop in the North Pole. Put your letter in an envelope and address it to Santa Claus, The North Pole.

There are a couple of options if you would like to receive a response in the mail back, postmarked from the North Pole.

USA – Letters from Santa

The United States Postal Service (USPS) has a Greetings from the North Pole Post Office. To get a letter from Santa postmarked the North Pole you will need to

  • Read your child’s letter, and write a response and sign From Santa. Do it right on the back of their own, to save paper, and to help them remember what they wrote.
  • Put both letters in the same envelope addressed to your child (your home address). Add the return address as Santa Claus, North Pole.
  • Ensure that you put first class postage on the envelope, so the letter will make it back to you.
  • Put the letters from Santa into a larger manila envelope like this one
  • Mail it with proper postage to the Postmaster in Anchorage, Alaska. There the individual letter from will be postmarked from the North Pole and mailed back to you.

The USPS recommends you send the letter before Dec. 7th to make sure it gets back in time for Christmas. In these times, I would send much earlier then that.

Canada – Canada Post Write a Letter to Santa

Canada Post has a Write A Letter to Santa Program. Volunteer postal elves reply to 1.6 million letters in 38 languages every year. In order to receive a letter back from Santa, write and send your letter to:

Santa Claus

North Pole

HOH OHO

Canada

Don’t forget to include your child’s name and return address or else you won’t get a letter back. They say to send them before Dec. 16th, but I would send them much earlier due to slower service and increase mail load during these times.

Our daughter loves writing her special letter to Santa every year, and receiving a letter back from Santa just takes the excitement to the next level. Christmas really is a magical time of the year for most children, and having traditions you do each year really makes things special, and something they can look forward to.
