Ingredients for Strawberry Puppy Chow
You will need:
- 2 cups cinnamon Chex cereal
- ¾ cup white chocolate chips, melted
- ½ cup freeze-dried strawberries, blended
- ½ cup powdered sugar
- ⅓ cup Valentine’s M&M’s
- ⅓ cup mini marshmallows
It makes about 3 cups of puppy chow, or 4 servings. So you can double or triple the recipe as needed.
If you’d like a gluten free version, just make sure it’s a gluten free Chex cereal, and that you use gluten free options for the other ingredients & your mix ins.
This goes well with our Valentine’s pretzel snacks too.
Instructions
1. Prepare the Strawberry Coating
Place the freeze-dried strawberries in a food processor and blend until they form a fine powder. Transfer the strawberry powder to a bowl and set it aside.
2. Melt the White Chocolate
In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the white chocolate chips in 30-second intervals at 50% power. Make sure to stir between intervals until smooth.
Be careful not to overheat, as white chocolate can burn easily.
3. Coat the Cereal
In a large mixing bowl, gently combine the Chex cereal with the melted white chocolate. Stir carefully to avoid breaking the cereal pieces. Ensure each piece is evenly coated.
4. Toss with Strawberry Powder and Powdered Sugar
In a large zip-top bag, combine the powdered sugar and blended freeze-dried strawberries.
Add the white chocolate-coated cereal to the bag, seal tightly, and shake vigorously until all cereal pieces are evenly coated with the sugar mixture.
PRO TIP: If you don’t want to use a plastic ziploc bag, you can also mix the powdered sugar and blended strawberries by hand in a bowl. Then sprinkle the mixture over the bowl of white chocolate covered Chex cereal a little at a time, ensuring you are mixing it all in.
5. Add Mix-Ins
Pour the coated cereal into a serving bowl and add the Valentine’s M&M’s and mini marshmallows. Gently toss to mix everything together.
6. Serve & Enjoy
Your Strawberry Puppy Chow is ready to serve!
Make treat bags out of it, or place in a fun serving bowl for everyone to enjoy.
Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
Tips & Notes:
- Prevent Cereal Breakage: When mixing the cereal with melted chocolate, use a light hand or a silicone spatula to avoid breaking the pieces.
- Customize Your Mix-Ins: Swap out the Valentine’s M&M’s and marshmallows for your favorites, or use other themed treats to suit different holidays or occasions.
- Double the Recipe: This recipe can easily be doubled if you’re making it for a larger crowd.
- Add Extra Strawberry Flavor: For even more strawberry goodness, mix in a handful of chopped dried strawberries.
