Planning a trip to Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam? You’re in for a treat.
This sunny island off Vietnam’s southern coast is full of adult & kid-friendly adventures, dreamy beaches, and surprising European inspired villages. We recently spent 3 weeks there with our 11 year old, and it was a fantastic holiday.
Whether you’re looking to build sandcastles or lounge on Sao Beach, ride the world’s longest oversea cable car or cool off at one of the island’s colorful waterparks, there’s something here for everyone.
And when the sun sets, the Phu Quoc Night Market is the perfect place to grab dinner, think grilled fresh seafood, and sweet treats on a stick. It’s lively, laid-back, and oh-so-fun.
So pack those swimsuits, and lots of sunscreen (you’ll need it), because here are the top 10 things to do on Phu Quoc Island that’ll make memories for a lifetime.
Depending on the time of year you go, certain sides of the island would be better.
One of our guides told us that during the dry season (November to April) the west side of the island is better, like Long Beach, up to Starfish Beach given the way the winds blow. During the wet season, May to October, the east side, and Sao Beach are better.
The water’s aren’t as clear as say the Philippines, but the beaches still have that white sand and tropical feel.
Just be prepared for some garbage along the shoreline. The resorts usually have people pick up the garbage in front of their buildings, but you’ll notice areas where there is quite a lot of junk acculmulated. Unfortunately this seems to be a common thing we noticed throughout our Vietnam visit.
Khem Beach
Khem Beach was actually our favorite. It was white sand, and much quieter than Long Beach.
At the main entrance where you get dropped off, there’s a shaded area under the Palm trees. You can put your blanket there for free. There’s also a few places to rent beach chairs up and down the beach.
Just watch out for the JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay resort to the right. The guards will let you walk through “their” beach, but not put a beach towl down.
Geting there: You can grab a free bus from the Sunset Town area, or take a Grab anywhere on the island. We found Grab to be the easiest.
Long Beach: The Ultimate Sunset Spot
Long Beach, located the western side of the island, is a must-visit for breathtaking sunsets and family-friendly fun.
It truly has a long shoreline (3km), making it perfect for evening strolls, with many beachfront hotels and restaurants serving freshly caught seafood, and cold drinks. We found the waves to be quite big in December when we went though, so not the greatest for little kids.
If you aren’t staying at a beach front resort, we noticed there were a few places you could rent lounge chairs & a towel for around 150K VND. There were a few near the Ocsen Beach Club, closer to where we stayed. There were also beach front lounge chairs you could use for “free” at the Versailles Mud Bath Spa & Club, as long as you bought a drink or food.
This is one of the main beaches with plenty of resorts, so it overall didn’t feel like you had a quiet beach to yourself.
Our first evening on the island we headed to Madam Keo’s for a delicious dinner, and watched the sunset from their beachfront restaurant.
LOCAL TIP: Head to the southern end for quieter stretches and more intimate sunset views.
🏩 We stayed at the affordable & gorgeous Palm Bay Resort near Long Beach for 2 weeks and loved it. Great breakfast, comfy beds and room, and our daughter swam in the pool multiple times a day. Small resort that was super easy to get to all the island’s activities by Grab.
Sao Beach: Pristine White Sands and Turquoise Waters
Known for its powdery white sand and 7 km long beach, Sao Beach on the eastern part of the island is ideal for families with kids who love to splash around. Or adults looking to relax at a beach bar or in a hammock.
We visited for lunch during our day tour of the island. The shoreline didn’t seem to drop off as fast as the areas we visited on Long Beach, so better for the little kids if it’s not a stormy day.
Arrive early in the morning to avoid crowds. There’s also plenty of places to rent Jetski’s, or go parasailing.
We visited in December around lunch time, and it was quite stormy on that side of the island with large waves, so there weren’t too many people around.
Getting there: It’s about a 45 min scooter ride from Duong Don area. Or you can take a Grab taxi, or a tour to visit for a few hours or the day.
Other attractions nearby: Sunset Town & Cable Car (9km / 20minutes), and Ho Quoc Temple (10km / 20 minutes).
2. Amuse Yourself At VinWonders Phu Quoc
VinWonders is like an Asian Disneyland, catering to families with a theme park of epic proportions.
You’ll find 6 different themed zones with rides & games, an aquarium, a huge waterpark, and multimedia shows. Plan for at least a day here, unless your kids get overwhelmed easily. There’s games and activities for all ages.
Here are a couple of our favorites:
- Sea Shell Aquarium: Look for the large turtle! Explore an impressive aquarium with 5 different areas focusing on different apsects of marine life; Wandering Sea, Ocean Treasure, Ice Palace, Giant Kingdom and Shark Realm.
- Mermaid Show: Watch talented performers in a dazzling underwater performance.
- Adventure Land: Focuses on the Maya and Greek civilizations. Try the Eagle Eye Ferris Wheel for panoramic views, the Swiss Family Coaster or the Viking River Rapid Ride for a fun family time.
Tickets: We generally just used Klook to buy all our attraction tickets throughout Vietnam, including tickets for VinWinders Phu Quoc, as their prices were competitive (often lower than on site). Plus the vouchers could be scanned for entrance, without having to carry around physical tickets.
Getting there: It’s located in Gành Dầu, on the northwestern coast of Phu Quoc Island and it’s part of the Grand World Phu Quoc complex. Many resorts have free shuttles that will take you there. A Grab will take about 540-50 min from the Dương Đông (main town) area and cost about 400K to 500K VND.
Hours: Generally open 10am – 7:30pm, but certain areas close at different times. Check out latest times here.
3. Taste the Local Flavors
While we found Saigon (Ho Chi Minh) & Hanoi to have a better selection of food of all types from street food to Michelin Guide restaurants, there are still some delicious spots to try on the island.
Dine at the Dương Đông Night Market
You really can’t visit the island without heading to the Phu Quoc Night Market (Dương Đông Night Market).
Experience the vibrant culinary scene where families can try fresh seafood caught that day, tropical fruits, and local street food. There are a few seafood restaurants right along the riverfront with plenty of seats, and extensive menus.
Our favorites were the stalls with fried bananas (20,000 VND) and rolled up ice cream (30,000 VND). We also recommend trying the grilled scallops topped with peanuts and herbs.
It’s also a great place to people watch, and look for souvenirs. You never know what you’ll see. We even ran into a vendor who had a small monkey as a pet (which was sad to see, but it was awfully cute and something we definitely wouldn’t see at home).
Local tip: If you want to avoid the crowds, visit around 5pm when it opens. It starts to get quite crowded around 6:30ish.
Location: Dương Đông Night Market
Tiem Vit Quay Minh Thien: For Roast Duck
If there’s an option for eating roasted duck, then my partner Derek and our youngest Miss S are always up to try it.
Tiem Vit Quay Minh Thien is a small family owned restaurant south of the airport. This unassuming place has delicious half or full roast duck orders, Char Siu Pork and some delicious veggie, meat and rice plates.
There’s kids running around, and family members in the background, so you really feel like you’re supporting a local business, which we love to do. Plus the food was really good.
All together for a huge meal of 4 dishes, plus 4 drinks it came to about 540K VND (about $30 CAD) with tip.
Location: Tem Vit Quay Minh Tien
When You’re Craving Western Food
Sometimes you just crave the taste of home when travelling, especially with kids who might not be as used to the different tastes and flavours.
Most resorts and beach front restaurants will have some items that cater to more western palates from burgers and fries, to pasta etc.
However here are a couple that stood out for us:
- The Home Pizza: Their gourmet wood fired pizzas are sooo good. I am still craving them. They have a lovely courtyard with wooden tables and inside air conditioned areas. Their fusion soy sauce beef pizza was a stand out for us, and you can get half and half pizzas if you want to try more types. They offer Vietnamese pizzas to the more traditional pizzas, and definitely get the tiramisu for dessert. Pizzas start at 240K VND.
- Nora’s Cafe (Vegetarian / Vegan): This is the spot for gorgeous looking & tasting smoothie bowls, rice bowls, avocado toast and HUGE lemon soda’s. Their Vietnamese Iced Coffee also hits the spot every time. We nicknamed it the Viet Hipster cafe.
4. Visit The Ho Quoc Pagoda
While not as well known as other temples in the Mekong Delta area, the more recently built Ho Quoc Pagoda, also known as Truc Lam Ho Quoc Monastery, makes for a pleasant trip on the eastern side of the island.
Plan for 1-2 hours and it’s free to visit.
It’s on a hill (Hon Mot Mountain) overlooking the sea, which means you will need to walk up 70 steps to the main area, and then another set of stairs if you want to see the large white Quan Yin statue up close.
It’s a really lovely Buddhist temple with many beautiful statues, Tam Quan Gate, a bell tower which has relaxing wind chimes to sit and listen to, and plenty of areas to explore with the kids. See if they can find the statues of monkeys playing on the rocks.
Getting there: You can hire a Grab (just be sure to have them waiting as it can be difficult to find one to take you home again). Or take a tour (we did the Southern Phu Quoc Land Tour with John’s Tours) or rent a scooter and drive yourself.
Other attractions nearby: Sao Beach (10km / 20 minutes), Sunset Town (13km / 25 minutes)
5. Take a Family Snorkeling & Island Hopping Adventure
If your kids are a bit older, then a snorkelling trip to nearby islands or at Starfish Beach is a treat.
A guided snorkeling tour is easier, as they know all the best spots, and handle all the logistics. Snorkelling Tours range from about $35 CAD ($25USD) per adult and up, and include visits to a few islands, snorkeling and lunch.
- Starfish Beach: This beach is known for its colorful coral reefs, white sandy shore and of course the many starfish that make their home here. Unfortunately due to tourists taking them out of the water and leaving them on the beach, their numbers have dwindled over the past few years. So please leave them in the water, and don’t touch.
- May Rut Trong Island: Part of the An Thoi islands, the May Rut Islands is actually two small islands, and a secluded paradise with white sand beaches and calm, shallow waters ideal for beginners. Head to the southern part of Phu Quoc island at An Thoi port to catch a boat, or even better, join an island hopping / snorkelling day tour.
- Gam Ghi Island: Also part of the An Thoi Islands chain, this island is a super popular spot to visit on an island hopping / snorkelling tour. The reefs are 0.3 to 3 metres from the surface, making it easy to see the
LOCAL TIP: Many of the tours we researched noted they didn’t have kid’s sized flippers, so you may want to bring your own.
6. Ride The World’s Longest 3 Rope Cable Car
If you’re family isn’t afraid of heights (or you can just grin and bear it for the rest of the group like I did), take a ride on the longest non-stop three-rope cable car in the world.
It stretches nearly 8 kilometers from An Thoi Town on Phu Quoc’s southern tip to Hon Thom Island (aka Pineapple Island), over beautiful views of a few smaller islands, harbours filled with boats and the ocean.
To be honest it wasn’t my favorite as I really don’t like heights. BUT the car is enclosed and pretty steady even in the windier parts, and there’s only a little blip as it moves up and over the cable sections by the pillars. Plus there’s lots of seating in each car so you can sit in the middle and not look down if you want.
Once you reach Hon Thom island your family can also:
- Visit Sun World Hon Thom Park, which has a beachfront waterpark, waterslides (see #7), Exotica Village (not sure what that is as we didn’t go), areas to relax and restaurants to eat at or grab a cold drink.
Also don’t forget to take those instagram worthy photos in the
Cost (Cable Car & Waterpark): Adults: 700,000 VND ( Children (100cm to 140cm in height): 550,000 VND. You can also by combo tickets with a brunch and other activities.
- ⭐️ We bought our Cable car ticket here to skip the ticket line up, and it actually cost less than the online tickets through the Sun World website and gave us access to visit the Kiss Bridge as well (beautiful at sunset). Easy to use voucher onsite at the various gate points.
LOCAL TIP: The cable car also has three departure windows from the An Thoi Departure Station (9:30am – 11:30am, 1:30-2pm and 3:30-5pm).
7. Splash Around Aquatopia Water Park
Aquatopia is a waterpark that’s part of the Hon Thom Sun World complex. Access is usually included with your cable car ticket.
There’s 6 theme areas, with different levels of thrilling waterslides and water activities.
We didn’t end up going as it was way too hot that day, and we couldn’t imagine being out in the sun running around for long. But it looked like fun and was fairly busy, even on a week day.
Alternatively VinWonders Phu Quoc near Grand World, also has a large waterpark.
Getting there: Take the Cable Car from An Thoi Station on Phu Quoc, to Hon Thom Island.
8. Visit Phu Quoc Bee Farm
Phu Quoc Bee Farm is such a great little demonstration farm with a few hives, an herb garden you can walk through, and a small restaurant and gift shop.
It’s a fun way to spend an hour or 90 minutes. Don’t forget to try their specialty drinks with honey. Delicious!
Surprisingly this was one of my daughter’s favorite thing she did our whole South East Asia trip.
9. Phu Quoc Southern Island Day Tour
If your kids are a bit older, and you are short on time, the Southern Phu Quoc Island Day Tour with John’s Tours is a fun way to see all the highlights and buy souvenirs.
This tour includes pick up from your hotel and a visit to:
- A Pearl Farm, Sim Wine Factory, Pepper Farm and a Fish Sauce factory
- Ho Quoc Pagoda
- Sao Beach (with optional lunch)
- Coconut Prison
- Sunset Town
We did the non-private tour option which cost us about $60CAD total for the 3 of us, with lunch included. Which we thought was a great deal. They used a small shuttle bus which held about 15 people.
We did enjoy the tour, however all the farm / factory stops were quite quick, without a lot of explanation, and seemed more geared towards people buying souvenirs, than actual learning the process about the different products.
Miss S. even convinced us to buy her a pearl necklace for her birthday present.
Derek & Miss S. skipped the Coconut Prison. I wouldn’t recommend doing that stop with young kids. The depictions of prisoners being tortured, and living under grim conditions during what they call the American War, are quite graphic.
Our highlights of John’s Phu Quoc Day Tour were Sao Beach and the Ho Quoc Pagoda. Sao Beach was delightful, and the lunch very tasty, with many shared dishes with your tablemates. The Ho Quoc Pagoda was peaceful, and interesting.
10. Ride a Gondola at Grand World
I am not sure what the fascination is with creating tourist areas with European architecture, but Grand World has to be seen to be believed. It’s so strange, yet entertaining for a few hours.
You can hope aboard the Venice River of Phu Quoc and enjoy a short gondola ride along the main area. At night time there’s a light and opera music show at the far end of the river you can see from the walkways.
Cost of Gondola Ride (look out for the water taxi signs): 200K VND for adults 150K VND for kids
Other things to do in Grand World include:
- Wander the Urban Park sculpture garden & check out the slide
- Enjoy the cultural dance & music show: “The Quintessence of Vietnam”
- Take photos in the Bamboo Building
- Enjoy a meal and some souvenir shopping (we really liked our meal at the 123 Restaurant)
- Visit nearby VinWonders amusement park and VinPearl Safari
There’s even a Teddy Bear Museum for the littles. From animated teddy bear scenes, to a collection of teddy bears throughout the years, an art station and photo ready scenes, it celebrates all things teddy bear related.
My eleven year old thought it was an interesting half hour walk through, but I don’t imagine older kids or most adults would be all that into it.
Getting there: There is a Free green VinBus 19 that runs up and down the island to many major resorts, and Grand World, or the VinBus 17 that has stops along the main road and Grand World. Or try a Grab.
11. Other Things To Do in Phu Quoc Island
Of course there are many other fun things to do in Phu Quoc, Vietnam. Here is a quick overview of a few
- Enjoy a Long Beach sunset with a drink in hand at Ocsen Beach Bar
- Visit Phu Quoc National Park, a lush jungle with waterfalls (Waterfalls can be seen during the rainy season), and Langur monkeys. You can do an organized hike with a guide, or try it youself. Entrance is free.
- Hike the 20 minutes to the Suoi Tranh Waterfall and dip your feet in it’s pools. Best visited during rainy season (May–October) when water flow is stronger; dry season can leave it more of a trickle or even dry.
- Eat at Rory’s Beach Bar – Pool, mini golf, snacks, and a chill beachy vibe.
- Get a Vietnamese massage or have your nails done at one of the many spas on the island.
- Check out King Kong Market, and buy some snacks, souvenirs and beach wear.
- See the amazing Kiss of the Sea multimedia show in Sunset Town – Family friendly storytelling through music, lights, dancing fountains and people. It ends with a fireworks display.
