How to Make Rice Krispie Frankenstein Treats
1. Melt the green candy melts

Place green candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl or with the double boiler method according to package instructions.
Generally we heat on defrost mode (or Heat on 50% power) for 30 seconds. Stir, then continue in 15 – 30 second intervals stirring each time, until candy melts are smooth.
Avoid overheating the candy melts. Candy melts can seize or burn if too hot. Always melt slowly and stir frequently.
If candy melts are too thick, add a little shortening (like Crisco) or coconut oil, as this helps smooth out the texture.
Here is a quick YouTube video tutorial I found super helpful on how to melt candy melts in both the microwave and double boiler.
2. Dip the Rice Krispies

Hold one end of the Rice Krispie treat and dip the other half into the bowl of melted green candy melts. Make sure to coat all sides. Then place on parchment paper.
3. Decorate the face

While the candy is still wet, press two candy eyes onto each treat and sprinkle the top with black sprinkles to make Frankenstein’s “hair.”
4. Add the stitches

Melt black candy melts the same way as above.
Place in a piping bag, snip the tip, and pipe small stitched lines for the mouth. Let dry completely.
Storage Tips: Place decorated treats in a single layer in an airtight container. Store at room temperature for up to 5 days. If stacking, use parchment between layers to prevent sticking.

Tips & Variations
- Swap the green melts for purple and make Frankenstein’s bride.
- Want homemade Rice Krispies? Use your fave base recipe and cut into rectangles before dipping. We generally just use the recipe from the Rice Krispie cereal box. You’ll need rice krispies, mini marshmallows, butter and vanilla.
- Make them mini-size: Cute the treats in half for little hands, dessert platters or Halloween charcuterie boards.
- Skip the piping bag: Use a toothpick dipped in melted black candy to draw small details if you don’t have piping tools, or a small ziploc bag.
- Make a monster lineup: Dip treats in different colors (purple, orange, white etc.) to create jack o’lanterns, ghosts, monsters and mummies.
- Turn it into a party activity: Prep the dipped treats ahead of time and let kids add faces and hair at a decorating station. Edible black writing gel is easier to use with kids than candy melts, and the eyes and hair will stick to it. It doesn’t harden completely, so best to use if they’ll eat their treats sooner than later.
