We love Halloween in our household. Between the costumes and Halloween themed treats, my kids, especially the youngest are super excited for Fall. I think the copious amounts of tasty treats and trick or treat candy might have something to do with it.

One year Miss S. even put up our small Christmas tree early and decorated it with homemade ghosts and spiders.

With all the Halloween festivities at school, home and friends, I like to have a couple of easy no bake fun Halloween treats and recipes in my back pocket. Which is where these ghoulishly good oreo bats and spiders come in.

I’ve brought these to Halloween potlucks & school classroom parties plus they’re a super fun activity to do with your little ones on rainy days. These Oreo treats are the perfect way to add a little spooky cute touch to your Halloween dessert table too!

Make The Easy Oreo Spiders

1. Prepare the Legs: Break the pretzel sticks into halves to make spider legs. You will need 6-8 legs per spider, so prepare accordingly.

2. Melt the Chocolate: In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the semi-sweet chocolate chips in 30-second intervals, stirring after each interval until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth.

3. Assemble the Spiders:

Twist open each Oreo cookie. Break the pretzel sticks in half and press into the cream filling side of the oreos to form the legs.

Replace the top of the Oreo, pressing gently to secure.

PRO TIPS: You can also add a little melted chocolate in the middle of the open cookie before replacing the top of the cookie, to make sure it sticks. The double stuff oreos give extra filling making them stick better as well.

4. Add Eyes: Using a small spoon, drop a little bit of melted chocolate in place for the eyes and attach two, edible candy eyes on each spider. For fun you can make spiders with 1, 2, or 3 eyes.

5. Set the Spiders:

Place the assembled spiders on a parchment-lined baking sheet and let them set completely either on the counter, or in the refrigerator for about 10 – 15 minutes. Keep in an airtight container once set.

Hold the wings in place for a few seconds until the chocolate begins to set and they stay in place.

3. Create the Faces: Using a small spoon, drop a little bit of melted chocolate in place for the eyes and attach two edible candy eyes on each bat.

4.  Set the Bats: Place the assembled bats on a parchment-lined baking sheet and let them set completely on the counter at room temperature or in the refrigerator for about 10-15 minutes. Keep in an airtight container once set.

Tips & Notes

  • Alternatives to Candy Eyes: If you are vegan or gluten free you typically can’t use store bought eyes as they use gelatin, and most can’t guarantee a gluten free product. Try this edible googly eye recipe instead. Or use a dot of thick icing, and mini chocolate chips, M&Ms or smarties.
  • Spider Legs: Instead of pretzels you can use cut up pieces of black licorice, licorice strings, or chocolate pocky sticks.
  • Alternatives to Melted Chocolate Chips: Try black icing gel or store bought vanilla or chocolate frosting.

I hope you enjoy making these sweet oreo bats and cute spiders, as they’re one of my favorite Halloween recipes. Plus these creepy crawlers, and spooky mini cookie bats are always a hit with kids and adults. They’re often the first tasty treats to be eaten when I put them out. Because who doesn’t like oreos? And Halloween oreo cookies are even better.
